TEFA
State funding families can use toward private school
Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) is a school choice program created by the Texas Legislature in 2025. It gives parents funds to pay for approved education expenses — including private school tuition — when they choose to enroll their child outside the public school system.
Texas Horizon Academy is a participating school, so families who are awarded TEFA funds can apply them toward their child’s education with us.

Eligibility
Who can apply?
According to the Texas Comptroller, a child may be eligible when:

Your child is a U.S. citizen or lawfully present in the United States.
- 02
Your child is eligible to attend a Texas public school district or charter school.
- 03
You, the parent, are a Texas resident.
How it works
From application to enrollment
Apply during the application window
Applications are submitted through the state’s TEFA parent portal. If applications exceed available funding, a lottery with priority tiers determines awards.
Register at Texas Horizon Academy
Complete our registration form and admissions process so your child can be enrolled at a participating school.
Confirm enrollment & use your funds
Once awarded, confirm your child’s school by the state’s deadline. Funds are released in installments during the school year.
Important
The 2026–27 application window has closed
The first TEFA application period ran from February 4 to March 31, 2026. Families who missed it can join the state’s interest list to be notified about the 2027–28 application period.
TEFA is run by the State of Texas, not by Texas Horizon Academy. Award amounts, dates and eligibility rules are set by the state and can change each year. Please check educationfreedom.texas.gov for the latest official information.
